Garden Plans > 2019: Hort 100 Vegtable Garden Project

About this Garden Plan

My garden consists of four 10x10 plots. My first garden on the far left is the successive vegetable garden. The top row holds my spring, summer, and fall cabbages; followed by a summer tomato crop and fall cabbage of a red variety; and lastly spring grown asparagus and fall drown carrots. In the spring/fall schedule my asparagus crop is vulnerable to a pest known as the Asparagus Beetle and my carrot crop is vulnerable to the Carrot Rust Fly as well as Carrot Weevils. The second garden I constructed is the beneficial habitat garden, located in the middle left. I chose the plant peppers and peas to attract pollinators such as bumble bees, then I chose to have sunflowers to attract lady bugs, they are predators and keep pests away. Then I added a cover crop, clover, to give composters such as millipedes something to munch on in the autumn. Finally, I added a pond to attract dragonflies, they also aid in pest control. Next up in the right middle I have a fruit garden. I decided to plant all berries, specifically raspberries, gooseberries, blueberries, and strawberries. For raspberries a potential pest is the Raspberry Cane Borer. Two methods of control is by cutting off the affected canes below the point of girdling or if there is a severe pest infestation, pesticide sprays are targeted on the adults in the immediate prebloom period, just before the flowers open. For blueberries a common threat is the Scale. A natural control method is to use Bonide All Seasons Horticultural & Dormant Spray Oil and a chemical treatment can be GardenTech Sevin Concentrate Bug Killer. A common pest for gooseberries is the gooseberry sawfly. Some methods of control are to prune bushes so that they have an open structure which allows good airflow. Sawflies prefer to lay their eggs into dense bushes. Another way would be to use an organic Pyrethrum-based product. Lastly, strawberries are vulnerable to Strawberry Thrips. Two ways to control them are to implement another bug, minute pirate bu
